We Are Saving Big Money! See How Our Food Challenge Was Cooked Up! :)
When we decided to make changes to our food buying habits, it wasn’t simply because food is one of our highest family expenses, even though now that I think about it, that is definitely the case, we want to make better choices for our health.
There are so many aspects that our eating habits affect. The time taken to go to a restaurant, the added expense, poor food choices, and waste.
We decided that we want to have a boot camp week or two. When we discussed a budget, $10 a day was the amount we agreed to hit for a week. So we took a look around and realized that we had so much food sitting around that it would be difficult to measure the amount spent. Not to mention the fact that we have always thrown a lot of food away, freezer burn and spoiling. So we decided that our first week we would eat only what was in our pantry and freezer. We agreed that we could buy staples, eggs, milk, bread, juice but for the sake of creating space and better forms of measurement, we are cleaning out what we have first! We certainly are not starving, tonight was turkey burgers and brats, shells and cheese and corn. I didn’t realize how much of a pack rat I was!
The goal is to spend a week eating on the 10$, now healthy food is an issue, we like organic milk and healthy bread, so once we get through our boot camp week, we will begin revising the budget amount to fit the healthy food habits. Once we have made the change permanent and habitual, we will again work in the rewards of eating out maybe once a week.
The outcome is a savings of between $150 to $200 per week and eating healthier. Crazy idea huh? keep logging in to check our progress! Any questions of course please direct them to erineadams@hotmail.com.
